Project Description

This 17,500 square foot library is located at Burnaby’s Edmonds area. The design of the facility emphasizes openness and accessibility. The main library space is a large room with a high ceiling. Exterior glazing adds to the sense of transparency and connectivity between library patrons and pedestrians outside.

The high ceiling contributes to daylighting by allowing high-level light from the clerestory windows to diffuse across the room. The added height helps with the ventilation of the space — automated, high-level windows open to allow hot air to escape, exploiting natural convective forces.

Project Description

The library expansion project is planned around a central three storey atrium as the main interior space. It allows the air to flow freely and generates natural ventilation for the building. The skylight on top of the central atrium allows natural daylight coming in. An interior green wall is also mounted to utilize the natural daylight, which providing a welcoming learning environment for the students.

The existing entry is replaced with a spacious two storey glazed lobby space incorporating a gallery and sitting area on the ground floor and a “balcony” on the second floor.
