Project Description

The UniverCity Childcare Centre is located at the heart of Simon Fraser University’s sustainable community of UniverCity. The facility is the first childcare centre in the world to integrate the Living Building Challenge™ (LBC), it is also the first LBC project in Canada.

Living Building Challenge™ program is arguably the most advanced green building certification program in the world. 100% of the building rainwater and wastewater are treated on-site and integrated into a comprehensive recycling system to feed the demands. The childcare centre is also a net-zero energy building, where the occupants can have access to daylight and fresh air in all spaces. The products and materials used in the project are all from local and regional sources and contain no toxic or hazardous chemicals.

The building has a modern look, yet its Interior is warm and inviting. It uses cell to floor curtain wall to maximize the use of natural daylight. Sunshades are installed to prevent over exposure.

Project Description

The building is the replacement of Yarrow Community Elementary, and it consolidated Rosedale Elementary/Middle Schools into a new elementary/middle school with multi-use community spaces.

This project takes collaborative design-build approach, and its design provides plenty of natural lighting with large windows and B.C. wood accents throughout the facility. The school has a geothermal heating and cooling system to reduce energy use.
